Ditchford Lock ‐ Ditchford Lock (paddle out and back)
Level: Easy (under most conditions)
Paddling Time: Half Day(approx 3.5 hours)
Distance: You′re in control
Availability: Can be limited by weather conditions more than other routes, due to the possibility of needing to paddle upstream against the prevailing wind at some point during your trip. So, conversely to all our other trips, this one is best booked close to your day of paddling, so that we can check on forecast conditions. Give us a call to discuss.
Arrival: For this trip you will need to be at our Ditchford Lock base no later than 1.00pm.
A small, but important note: Richard & Ian very much hope that these pages give you a good idea of the various trips offered by Canoe2. But really, there′s no substitute for giving us a call and having a chat. We can talk over the various abilities in your group, the type of accommodation you prefer, and anything that might be important to you. That way, we can recommend the best trip for you. Or if you prefer just drop us an email.
Why Paddle out and back to Ditchford Lock? This paddle is the exception to the rule, in that there is no transport offerred. You paddle out from Ditchford Lock, and then turn around and come back. Truth is, we generally recommend that you take one of our other trips, which include transport, so that you can enjoy as much of the river as possible in the time you have (and avoid having to paddle upstream). However, if you′ve left it a little late booking, or just want a brief couple of hours on the river as a taster, then this might be the one for you.
As you leave one of the canoe portage platforms at Ditchford Lock, you might choose to head downstream first, toward Higham Ferrers Lock, and then on toward Stanwick Lakes, perhaps pausing for a drink or a picnic before turning around and heading back (upstream) to Ditchford Lock. Alternatively, and perhaps if you′re a little more cautious, you might want to paddle upstream in the first instance, when you leave Ditchford, by heading toward Wellingborough Embankment, knowing that the return paddle will be easier on the way back downstream to Ditchford. The choice is yours!
And, with this trip starting and ending at Ditchford Lock, you might want to bring your tent along and stopover with us at the campsite adjoining our base.
Locks: The locks along the river make great rest points. Access to and from the river either side of the locks is generally by newly installed portages (low level platforms either side of the locks). Where portages are not available, access varies but is typically via boat moorings or low level floating pontoons. We also supply, included in the price of your package, great little canoe "trolleys", so you can choose whether to carry, or simply wheel your canoe past the locks.

Why Paddle Hardwater Mill to Ditchford? If you have limited time available, or want a really easy going few hours for your first paddle experience, this shorter "taster" trip might be for you.
On this trip down the river, you′ll have opportunities to stop and get out the water (perhaps for a flask of coffee or a picnic) at Wellingborough embankment, as well as three locks en-route. You′ll also come across the 14 Arches Bridge at Irchester, and at the end of your half-days paddling you might choose to take a relaxing walk around Ditchford Lakes Nature Reserve, a registered site of Special Scientific Interest.

Level: Beginner
Paddling Time: One Day (approx 6 hours)
Distance: 8.5 miles
Arrival Time: For this one-day trip, you′ll need to be at Thrapston Nine Arches Bridge no later than 9.45am.

Why Paddle Thrapston to Oundle? Possibly our favourite single day trip! This route offers an outstanding day on the river, and at less than 8.5 miles, shouldn′t be too testing. You′ll be getting into the water at the Nine Arches Bridge in Thrapston / Islip to begin your paddle. There are some wonderful stopping points along this stretch of the river, with 4 or 5 locks, not to mention two fabulous food & drink options. The first is the King′s Head at Wadenhoe, well situated for an early Lunch and reckoned by The Sunday Times to be the best riverside pub in Britain, where you can step out of your canoe straight into their garden. Also on this trip you′ll be passing by The Middle Nene Sailing Club, Titchmarsh Nature Reserve, Wadenhoe′s Norman Church, The Lyveden Way, Lilford Hall, and a beautiful Arched Bridge at Lilford that can only really be appreciated from the river (as shown in the picture on our home page). This great trip ends at the lovely Upper Barnwell Lock, situated right next to "Oundle Mill" (restaurant & rooms) where you might like to stop for a drink or full afternoon tea before we pick you up to return to your vehicle.
Whether you want an easy start in the morning, or you plan to combine this trip with others, overnight accommodation is available at The Woolpack Inn, situated in Islip, directly opposite our morning embarkation point at Nine Arches Bridge, or The Bridge Hotel, just over the bridge in Thrapston. Or you can always choose to camp with us at Ditchford. If you are considering combining this day of paddling with others, we would recommend our two-day paddle, Ditchford Lock to Oundle Mill, and please be sure to check out our Short Breaks Brochure, which you can download for free from this website, offering trips combined with Comfy camping or hotel / B&B combinations.

Why Paddle Hardwater Mill to Ringstead? This is a lovely way to enjoy the complete experience of camping overnight, combined with two consecutive days on the river, but with a limited amount of paddling (just 3 or 4 hours per day). A great choice for younger families with a sense of adventure.
On the first day, paddling from Hardwater Mill to Ditchford Lock, you′ll have opportunities to stop and get out the water (perhaps for a flask of coffee or a picnic) at Wellingborough embankment, as well as three locks en-route. Your journey will also take you past The Frontier Centre, Stanwick Lakes, and on to Willy Watt Marina at your final destination of Lower Ringstead Lock. If you allow enough time, you might also choose to explore the beautiful backwater that winds its way round Stanwick Lakes, and even offers a stopping place where children and adults can enjoy a challenging time on a full size assault course. Why Paddle Thrapston to Fotheringhay? On this beautiful trip down the river you′ll have opportunities to stop and take a break, enjoy your flask of coffee or have a picnic, at any of the eight locks you′ll come across over the two days
The first day is one of our favourites. Offering an outstanding day on the river, and at less than 8.5 miles, this one shouldn′t be too testing. You′ll be getting into the water at the Nine Arches Bridge in Thrapston / Islip to begin your paddle. There are some wonderful stopping points along this stretch of the river, with 4 locks, not to mention two fabulous food & drink options. The exact end point of this great days paddling will depend upon your choice of accommodation for the night, but will be somewhere before, or at, the lovely Upper Barnwell Lock. Options at the end of the day include afternoon tea at "Oundle Mill" (restaurant & rooms), dinner, bed & breakfast at Barnwells "Lilford Lodge", or simply camp at a great little informal site we′ve managed to arrange for you.
Your second day will take you on down the river past Oundle Marina, around the outskirts of the town of Oundle, and past the little villages of Cotterstock & Tansor. Your trip ends at Fotheringhay, a really lovely, and historically important village, being the birthplace of Richard III, as well as the location of the execution of Mary Queen of Scots in 1587, after being held captive in Fotheringhay castle. Before we pick you up from Fotheringhay and transport you back to your vehicle, you may have time to enjoy a drink or a bite to eat at the excellent Falcon Inn.
Locks:The locks along the river make great rest points.
CANOE PRICES: Includes hire of canoe & all related equipment, as well as transport back to your start point at the end of your trip.
