4 Useful Paddling Apps and Websites

In this blog, we are going to take a look at 4 useful paddling apps and websites for you to have a quick read of. Information is very useful as it allows you to make more informed decisions and ensure good preparation can happen.

Met Office

The Met Office is the leading meteorology (weather) provider for the public and majority of organisations. They are also responsible for the weather information you see on television!

We all understand the importance of checking the weather when planning our next paddling adventure! Lots of rain a few days before could mean river levels are high in the area. If river levels are high, rivers will be faster flowing, there could be added dangers in the water and some waterways may close for flood control. Hot weather will mean you need suncream, hat and plenty of fluids.

Knowing what the weathers going to do in the immediate term and further in to your paddle, will allow you to prepare appropriately. For example, how much water to take with you, plenty of sun cream and suitable clothing as well. Just remember, to always check the weather before and during every time you paddle.

The latest update to the Met Office now includes tide times to allow you to identify high and low water, and water safety information on how to stay safe around the water.

The Paddlers’ Code

The Paddlers’ Code is a super simple set of good practice guidelines that is hoped people will share and use every time they go out paddling. It is not about giving people a set of rules to abide by. It is more about describing the good things we do as a community to paddle responsibly, and respect, protect and enjoy our waterways.

Like the Countryside Code, the Paddlers’ Code shows how paddlers can best protect wildlife and spot pollution with other pieces of advice. The code includes advice for paddlers to keep group sizes small and discreet, avoid damaging fences and walls when lifting crafts over them and generally being respectful to those you meet along the water.

What3Words

What3Words is an app that was created to identify specific and precise locations, such as building entrances, and those that don’t have addresses like parks and many rural areas. The world is divided into 3 metre squares and given each square is a unique combination of three words. It’s the easiest way to find and share exact locations.

It’s one of those apps that some people love and some people, but it’s one of those apps to have ‘just in-case.’ It has definitely saved many lives over the years and shown its usefulness. If you ever find yourself in difficulty, the app can locate you down to a 3m square for emergency services to come to your rescue. Of course, we hope it doesn’t come to that! It can also be used to arrange a meeting point for your fellow paddlers and identify an appropriate launch point.

PaddlePoints

The PaddlePoints service is for paddlers new and experienced. It is free to access without an account, but creating one will allow you to map your own public and private routes. You will also be able to comment on others’ points, upload images, store hazards, and create Personal Information Markers to receive updates about new routes and points on your favourite waterways.

To find PaddlePoints, either use the search bar or browse the map. They have also mapped rivers and canals. Use the buttons to toggle various displays, the legend and filters. Clicking on the icons on the map allows you to access for information.
