This trip offers you the opportunity to spend some time exploring one of Northamptonshire’s most attractive villages and enjoy a truly memorable stay at Pear Tree Farm.
Starting your river journey from The Nine Arches Boat Moorings at Thrapston at around 9.30am with a thorough safety briefing, you will then paddle 4 miles to the 17th Century Kings Head at Wadenhoe in time for lunch - considered by The Sunday Times to be the best riverside pub in Britain, where you can step out of your canoe straight into their garden. The perfect riverside thatched inn with an excellent reputation for its food, drink and atmosphere. Just a short walk along the Nene Way and you pass the 800 year old Norman church. The setting here is just idyllic. If this isn’t quite enough for you, please phone to discuss possibility of making the first day a far longer, very challenging paddle
Your hosts for the evening will come and collect you from the Kings Head and shuttle you over to your overnight stay which is situated in the lovely village of Aldwincle in the Nene Valley,
Peartree Farm is a quiet, comfortable and a very civilised place to enjoy an overnight stay. The fine old greystone building has a warm, welcoming interior, and all the quaint, pretty bedrooms have en-suite facilities. Some are in the farmhouse, the rest in the converted stable block. This is a working farm of some 470 acres with crops and some cattle. You can expect a fine farmhouse breakfast to start your new paddling day.
With time to explore the area why not head for Lyveden New Beild. A splendid walk across fields will take you to this Elizabethan property, abandoned In 1605 when its creator Sir Thomas Tresham died and his son became embroiled in the Catholic gunpowder plot.
After breakfast you will continue your journey down river passing the splendid Lilford Hall, once the home of Sir Thomas Powys, who held the post of Attorney General to King James II. Once you reach Oundle Mill you can take the small pretty backwater that passes around Barnwell Country Park and return along the main river to Oundle Mill. From here we will collect you at 4.30pm and transfer you back to your start point.
