This great value paddle also benefits from the convenience of paddling out and back from Rushden Lakes, making it perfect as part of a regular keep fit regime (ask about our regular “canoe-nasium” paddler discounts).

More Information

Level: Easy (under most conditions)

Paddling Time: Taster Session (approx 2 hours)

Distance: You’re in control

Availability: Can be limited by weather conditions more than other routes, due to the possibility of needing to paddle upstream against the prevailing wind at some point during your trip. So, conversely to all our other trips, this one is best booked close to your day of paddling, so that we can check on forecast conditions. Give us a call to discuss.

Arrival Time: Just turn up to The Boathouse any time between 10.00am and 2.00pm. We might help you out there & then, or on busy days, we might limit start times to “on the hour, every hour”. If in doubt, phone to check.

Richard & Ian very much hope that these pages give you a good idea of the various trips offered by Canoe2. But really, there’s no substitute for giving us a call and having a chat. We can talk over the various abilities in your group, the type of accommodation you prefer, and anything that might be important to you. That way, we can recommend the best trip for you. Or if you prefer just drop us an email.

Why Paddle out and back to The Boathouse at Rushden Lakes? This paddle is the exception to the rule, in that there is no transport offered. You paddle out from The Boathouse, across our lake, portage across to the river, and explore. Then you’ll turn around and come back.

As you leave the lake and set off on the river, you might choose to head downstream first, toward Higham Ferrers Lock. Alternatively, and perhaps if you’re a little more cautious, you might want to paddle upstream in the first instance, when you leave the lake, by heading toward Wellingborough Embankment, knowing that the return paddle will be easier on the way back downstream to the lake. The choice is yours, though we will advise the best direction on the day, depending upon conditions.

Let us know if you fancy camping nearby before or after your paddle, and we can make one or two recommendations.

Locks:The locks along the river make great rest points. Access to and from the river either side of the locks is generally via portage platforms (low level platforms either side of the locks). Where portages are not available, access varies but is typically via boat moorings or low level floating pontoons. We also supply, included in the price of your package, great little canoe “trolleys”, so you can choose whether to carry, or simply wheel your canoe past the locks.
